The Bulgarian Labour Inspectorate initiated a large-scale campaign at the start of 2026 to investigate working conditions on digital labour platforms.
Ekaterina Asenova, executive director of the Labour Inspectorate, said the campaign was necessary “to see how the legal relations in Bulgaria stand regarding this type of work”.
She added that the campaign would help identify bogus self-employment, a common phenomenon in the gig economy.
“In order to identify a person and take the measures that are within our powers to declare the existence of an employment relationship, we must find him at work,” Asenova explained.
The campaign is part of Bulgaria’s preparations for the transposition of the Platform Work Directive.
